A list of the recommended software settings follows:
Please turn all PowerMangement routines off. This means those under Windows and those in the BIOS of the system. If you happen to be using the Symbios SCSI tools, then the powersaving routines from this program should also be switched off.
Apart from that in many cases the busmaster drivers have to be deinstalled so that Nero works.
On this, an excerpt from http://www.viatech.com/support/faq.htm
Q: Why am I unable to use my CD Writer or Tape Drive when I install the VIA busmaster driver?
A: VIA is presently working very closely with manufacturers of CD Writers and Tape Drives to add support into our upcoming drivers. As these devices are fairly new to the market, adding support takes some time. VIA suggests uninstalling the VIA IDE busmaster driver and using the Windows standard default driver. An upgrade to Win95 OSR2 or Win98 is advised to take advantage of IDE and UDMA transfers.
If the option 'Auto insert notification' is active, then Windows 95/98/NT will be informed straight away as soon as a new CD is inserted or when a CD is removed. Unfortunately this option can cause problems during the burning process so that it is advisable to deactivate this option:
Please click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Device Manager->CD-ROM
Now for all CD drives under Properties->Settings deactivate the option 'Auto insert notification'. Afterwards it is necessary to restart the system.
Please open the registration editor and change to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDROM
Now set the entry of the value Autorun
to 0. Then restart Windows NT.
Please click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->CD-ROM
Now select your CD-ROM or CD Writer to be selected and in settings deactivate the option DMA . Afterwards it is necessary to restart Windows.

. If you do not have this CD, you can download the program from the following Internet address: http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/Dmachcki.exeNote: It is possible that Nero will not start correctly any more after activating DMA . If you have a mainboard with an Intel chipset, then you should replace the standard IDE driver ATAPI.SYS with the PIIXIDE.SYS driver. The driver can be downloaded from the following address:
The field Sync data transfer should not be activated. That is for the CD Writer and for the CD-ROM drives. The option Sync data transfer is only available in Windows 95/98. Modern SCSI-devices can possibly handle this correctly. T.-his can only be ascertained through testing.
(Under the individual devices at: Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->CD-ROM)
For all devices, Disconnect should be activated. Nero shows an error message on starting as a general rule, if Disconnect is not activated and can then usually also correct this option. If Nero can not correct the option, then this has to be done manually.
Please click on Start->Settings->System->Device Manager->CD-ROM
now for all CD-ROM drives or CD burners, under settings activate the option Disconnect .
In some cases for Nero the error message appears Disconnect is not activated even if a SCSI ZIP drive is connected. Nero can not activated the Disconnect for this device.
Comment: The option Disconnect should only be for SCSIdevices. If this option appears for one of the IDE devices, then you should read the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q178/1/60.asp
On many computers, the start files CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT also load the Real-Mode driver for the CD-ROM drive or for the CD Writer . These drives can prevent correct functioning in Nero and should therefore be removed for Windows 95 oepration. Both these start files can be found in the main directory on drive C:
Please proceed as follows to remove the Real-Mode drivers from the start files:
"sysedit"
(without the inverted commas). And now press OK."rem "
in the first column (without the inverted commas). After rem
there must be a space.The line you are looking for will look something like:
c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001
(it is possible that the MSCDEX.EXE program is in another directory and/or that the device name which comes after /d:
(and is called mscd001
here) has another name. Please note this device name.
"rem "
in the first column (without the inverted commas). After rem
there must be a space.The line you are looking for will look something like:
device=c:\cdrom\cdrom.sys /d:mscd001
The driver name CDROM.SYS will probably have another name and could also be found in another path. The driver name depends on the vendor of the CD drive. At the end of a list of CD-ROM driver names which however is not complete:
